Connor was born with a congenital birth defect called Microtia, of which he has Grade 3. So what is Microtia you ask?
Microtia is a congenital condition, which causes a child to be born with a small, malformed, or missing ear. For 90% of microtia patients, the condition only affects one ear. Because microtia is so rare, it is rarely detected on prenatal ultrasounds. Most patients with the most severe form of microtia also lack an external auditory canal, also known as “atresia”. (no ear canal) There are 4 grades of microtia.
Connor was born to two adoring parents, who as you can imagine got the fright of their lives when the Dr informed them that there was something wrong with their child. Microtia is not a well know defect and this particular Dr did not know what it was. Research was done, other doctors were seen and eventually we were happy that the birth defect only affected his ear and the rest of him would develop normally. Forward on 13 years and I have a sporty intelligent well adjusted teenager, who is kind and caring and well mannered. He has endured teasing through the year but has handled himself well. His one request is that we surgically correct his ear. Which can be done with a highly specialized surgery.
Connor and I lost his father when he was younger and so I am trying to raise this wonderful young man myself. Although this is a big request I feel it is a fair one and so we are asking for your help to make it happen.
