Narrative project summary
Zambia gained its independence in 1964 from British colonial rule. At the same time of independence Zambia was ranked the third richest country in Africa. Economic decline since the mid-1970s has reduced access to social services, poor road network with some areas inaccessible and widespread impoverishment. Out of the estimated population of 13 million people, 65% reside in rural areas and 35% in urban areas, which give Zambia one of the highest levels of urbanization in Africa. It is a young population with the age group of 0 – 14 making up as much as 45% of the total population.
The major challenges rural communities face in Zambia are numerous, but critical to the well being of these communities is access to health services (where clinics are non-existent or very far), market places, schools for education, water for domestic & agricultural usage and renewable energy for productive usage. Most rural schools lack educational and learning materials, electronic means of storage of information, print outs of educational materials, computer literacy programs, and hence most school pupils in rural areas are more disadvantaged than those in urban areas.
