Thanks for giving me you time. My name is Alex and I am an IT professional.
In the course of my work I have realised that even though my country Kenya is a hotbed of innovation especially in matters technology we have a major hinderance.
Our Internet, which is a key component in research and learning, is quite expensive. Internet in Kenya is mostly offered by mobile telcos and is usually in small packages -data bundles.
I together with a few members of my community would like to start a community based Wireless Internet Service Provider which will provide Internet as a service but instead of data bundles, we wish to offer fast, affordable, unlimited internet.
We will do this by setting up hotspots in the neighbourhood and partner with institutions like religious institutions and schools to provide space.
The majority of unemployed youths will have fast internet and not have to worry about their bundles running out. They can concentrate on coming up with products and services that will meet the needs of the communities around them and provide them with employment and income.
The 80% of the $15,000 ( $12,000) will go towards buying Internet Equipment (Antennas, Access Points, CPE, Routers, Switches etc).the rest will go towards purchasing Internet. We have managed to secure a space that we can use as our office and most of the employees will be IT volunteers who live in the neighbourhood.
We and the youth of Embakasi (Nairobi County) will be entirely grateful as this project will help alleviate a major key component of our daily expense as well as provide a much needed infrastructure in our community. based on the network growth, we can train the neighbouring estates and grow this into a co-op which will eventually lead to a fully fledged Internet Service provider employing the same youth from the areas covered.
Once again thank you for your time and for your money.
Alex (Mwerezi WISP).
