Campaign Story
"Restavek" is the term used for modern-day slavery that takes place in Haiti. One in every 15 children will become a child restavek. These typically are children born in poor rural families and then are given to relatives or complete strangers. They become domestic slaves and do not make any pay. In Haitian Creole, "restavek" means "to stay with" which is an incomplete definition for the children who are called this. Instead, for these children it means.....to stay with...humiliation and abuse, to stay with...alone, in a family that offers no love, to stay with...an incessant and knawing hunger, to stay with...the feeling that no matter what, their voice, their lives, will never count.
To make an effort to end child slavery, the proceeds from tickets sales and donations from the Comedy for a Cause Event will be going towards giving the gift of freedom and helping these children gain an education, receive another meal, or to simply put a pair of shoes on their feet.
