A year ago my charming childhood friend Ross was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. Unfortunately, despite his incredible fighting spirit, he lost his battle earlier this year at the age of 27.

Amazing amounts of money have been raised for Cancer Research and the Young Adult Unit at St James' Hospital by many who knew and loved him.

On May 17th I am running 5k (yes, this doesn't sound very far, but for me it is!) as part of Colour Me Rad at Harewood House. I would like to raise some funds to treat the staff on Ward 14 at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The ward 14 nurses supported Ross through his initial diagnosis and subsequent nephrectomy (major surgery to remove his kidney). It is often the case that the staff on these 'normal' wards are forgotten. Their compassion for their patients is priceless, and as an NHS worker myself, I know how much dedication it takes to offer both medical and emotional support to those faced with life-changing diagnoses.

Ross had those nurses wrapped around his little finger (like we would expect anything less from him!) and I'm sure he would like to think that the amazing job they did with him, and continue to do on a daily basis, is recognised and rewarded in some small way.  So let's raise some pennies and buy them a meal out, a radio for their staff room, a year's supply of magazines to make the night shifts that little bit easier, or anything else you might suggest. The everyday nurses are everyday heroes, and the support they gave to Ross in exchange for his cheeky smile was invaluable :)
