One of my dreams is to be a certified makeup artist and teacher. Although I work very hard and two of my three jobs are within the beauty industry, I am facing a deficit. Every cent I make goes towards bills. I have no room to save even though I am very frugal. I want to get an education to further my career but I can't even afford basic products for a makeup kit; I can’t buy/rent a camera or lights to become the next Youtube sensation; I post on Instagram, but I have little time between working, so driving in traffic is difficult. I am grateful I have made it this far especially considering I have been legally independent since I was 16, but on top of having little money, I have faced many setbacks, as we all do, that seemingly render my plans null. Though it is a daily battle and balancing act, I will not stop. I keep my head up and stay focused on my goal of getting an education.
I am lucky enough to work as a lead makeup artist with the Young Actors’ Theatre Camp, a sleepaway camp for children ages 8-18. We produce films and host activities that not only promote excellence in the performing arts but allow for a safe, supportive environment full of expression and personal growth. It is my favorite place. I am surrounded by gifted and inspiring children with whom I share my passions. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I feel so rewarded working with them, I want to give back everything I possibly can. Furthering my education would not only strengthen my work and further my career but also enhance the personal development of the children.
Makeup is a ritual experience and an act of self-love. It is my job to paint faces, yes, but more so I am an architect of confidence. The majority of my clients struggle with self-esteem. It really hurts me to hear people putting themselves down because I think everyone is beautiful. You can imagine how painful it is to hear children say the same type of self-deprecating remarks. I can't go into their brains and change the way they think, but I can give them the tips and tools to unleash how they feel and a strong foundation to build upon. With your donation, no matter how small, you can help me.
