To gain insights into the types and accumulations of of plastic pollution in an effort to combat ocean plastic waste, the Strandloper Project conducts an annual coastal research expedition. Hiking between 190km and 250km per expedition, we map the density and distribution of washed up plastic pollution and fishing debris. Analysis of the plastic pollution data allows modelling of which rivers and municipal infrastructure are responsible for the flow of plastic pollution into the ocean. Using the data, the Srandloper Project motivates and collaborates with municipalities to implement measures to reduce and mitigate future inflows of plastic waste into the ocean.

Spatial analysis of the type and distribution of fishing gear provides a correlation of fishing activates in relation to marine protected areas and provides insight into the types of fishing occurring relative to the MPA's.

To date the Strandloper Project has hiked and surveyed 605km between Storms River and Hermanus, approximately 20% of the South African coastline.

In October 2022, on their most ambitious expedition, the coastal research team plan to hike 250km+ between Storm's River in Titsikamma and Cape Recife Lighthouse in Gqeberha.
