Campaign Story
In September of this year, I will be travelling to Sri Lanka and staying for around 6 weeks to assist Clinical Psychologists in working with trauma victims of the tsunami and of civil war. I am now (or very soon to be) a Psychology graduate, which makes a project like this important to me. Mental health is often stigmatised and not well supported or understood, particularly in Sri Lanka, where the suicide rate each year is one of the highest in the world (pleease see the link at the bottom of the page for an article regarding mental health in Sri Lanka). The facilities and training of mental health professionals in Sri Lanka is steadily improving however, and I hope to provide whatever skills I can to assist the psychologists and patients there. I will also be teaching English to children and adults, which will hopefully increase their employment opportunities (and I am currently attempting to brush up on the local language myself) and will be working with disabled children in learning and play environments. Although this project will be of benefit to myself, providing me with invaluable experience which will hopefully increase my opportunities of becoming a clinical psychologist in the future, it is of paramount importance to me that I deliver services that will be beneficial to the individuals I will be working with. I also certainly hope to explore the country as much as I can when I am out there. Any donations, however large or small will be hugely appreciated. Every donation is important and will help to cover my flights, my visa, my accommodation, the donation I will make to the hospital I will be working in and other items such as learning resources. Thank you so so much in advance!
