Campaign Story
INTRODUCTION
The water crisis is real. It’s affecting women, children, families and farmers. Women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa are spending hours a day fetching dirty water which leads to illness and disease, robbing entire communities of their futures.
Lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation limits education and food production; it harms health and leads to a cycle of poverty.
We want to help our neighbors and we know you do too. When you support The Olive Charitable Foundation Water Project, you help bring clean water through new wells, rehabbed wells, sand dams, rainwater catchment systems and/or spring protections to schools, medical clinics and entire villages.
OBJECTIVE
Our main objective is improve access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services for target communities using the WHO Hygiene and Sanitation Programming guidance. Clean water projects can improve health, shorten the time spent walking for water, and even help define and rebuild our communities.
FACT
- More than 67.5% of the population (approx. 278,000) of Ssabagabo, Wakiso District in Uganda lack access to clean water and almost 82.6 lack proper sanitation.
- Almost 2.1 billion people globally lack safe water at home.
- Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for more than 40% of the global population without access to improved drinking water.
- Over 1.1 billion people (15 per cent of the global population) practice open defecation and up to 949 million open defecators live in rural areas.
- Up to 842 000 people are estimated to die each year from diarrhoea as a result of unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and hand hygiene.
OUR APPROACH
Water
OLIVE CHARITABLE TRUST enhances access to clean and portable water to households and their livestock by promoting rain water harvesting technologies to adapt to climate change through the establishment of underground water harvesting tanks, drilling of boreholes, as well as rehabilitation and improvement of existing water pans and wells.
Sanitation
To reverse this phenomenon, OLIVE CHARITABLE TRUST is working to end open defecation through awareness creation, information sharing, and spurring behavior change in an effort to bridge the gap between building of sanitation facilities and their actual use.
Hygiene
OLIVE CHARITABLE TRUST aims at empowering communities on good hygiene practices to reduce the prevalence of diarrhea and diseases such as cholera in our target communities. We recognize that a key component to improving hygiene practices is to promote behavioral change within schools and communities.
Though education is important to promoting hygiene, we are also aware that it alone does not result in improved practices. Promoting behavior change is a gradual process that involves working closely with communities, studying existing beliefs, defining motivation strategies, and designing appropriate communication tools.
