At the beginning of the semester I asked my students a simple question, “Do you like to read?” These were the results:

YES- 13%

NO- 50%

IT DEPENDS- 38%

When I asked if they’ve ever read a book they liked, many responded with a book they read in elementary, some mentioned a book assigned to them at school, and others said, “Never.”

Research suggests that the path towards becoming a lifelong reader is to read a high volume of engaging books. Sadly, this is not happening for most of our teens.

As a high school English teacher, I’m on a mission to put the right book in each of my students’ hands. Every day, we’re taking time to read both in and out of class. My students are choosing books, experimenting with different genres, and slowly discovering their identities as readers. To be able to match them to books that meet their needs and interests, I need your help.

My students are wonderfully unique. A handful of them are avid readers who crave complex characters and unpredictable plots. Others struggle with reading and suffer from a deeply rooted belief that they are simply not meant to be readers and never will be. Many of my brilliant and creative students have language based learning disabilities that create further obstacles in their reading journey. Thus, I need many books of different levels and subjects.

Experts recommend a classroom library should have at least 20 books per student. I have 48 students, which means my library should have at least 960 books!

I am working hard to build up my library. Many of the books you see in the picture were purchased by me because I believe in my kids and am passionate about their potential. I currently have 139 books in my library and several more on the way. I buy most of the books used or on sale, and they cost an average of $5 each.

With $500 I can add about 100 more books to my library. Every dollar you can contribute counts towards my students developing a love for reading. Please help me reach my goal for sharing this with everyone you know who believes that reading matters and that there is no educational tool better than a good book.
