The Backstory
-My name is Ruth Yu-Owen.
My mother is from the conflict area of Sulu, Mindanao. Peace has always been evasive in these islands as far as I can remember.
Children are always the main victims of war.
I've been a peace volunteer for many years working with the Philippine Marines on medical missions along with Doctors, Dentists and other volunteers bringing help and hope to the community. I donate books and read to children which bring me so much joy as I also speak the dialect which is Tausug.
What caught my attention is this school in the small island of Omar, Sulu.
Tandu Panuan Elementary School has 150 students and One (1) Teacher!
The students range from Grade one to Grade 6.
There are Two (2) Classroom buildings that are dilapidated and needs serious renovation. The roofs have holes in them and the walls are exposed, floors are muddy and the classroom desks are made from make-shift woods. Rather depressing.
THE COSTS ------------------------------- USD6000
- For Two (2) Classrooms
- Construction Materials
- Cement
-Sand and Gravel
-Plywood
-Paint
-Labor
-Masonry works
-Carpentry
-Painting
The Soldiers of the Philippine Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 under the Command of Lt. Col. Stephen Cabanlet will provide the manpower to renovate the classrooms along with some locals.
Actually, the renovation has already started as some of my friends have sent me money to help me fulfil my birthday wish to renovate this school. However, this is not enough. There is more to be done. It's almost like building the school from scratch!
We need funding the soonest possible time to continue the work that has been started. Aiming to reach our goal of USD6000 by September 30, 2018.
I would be extremely grateful if you can help me bring Hope, Love and a chance for a brighter future to these children in the conflict area of Sulu.
