My students and I take a great deal of pride in learning and growing together Our learning environment is engaging, open, and free. They is very little criticism, but vibrant discussions the go both ways. We believe that everyone who enters our classroom is a learner and support each other.  The students at my school are economically disadvantaged, but are willing to work to improve themselves and their environment. Our 4th graders have consistently produced some of the best Writing scores in the county over the past 3 years. They have limited resources at home and in school, therefore, the teachers usually end up spending money for supplies. The students love to do hands-on projects but because of the limited resources, they are often difficult to fund. I love to do hands-on science projects throughout the year, these can be quite costly. I hope to be able to get supplies to do several of these projects and allow the students to keep some of the materials so that it makes a lasting impression on them. So many of our students have a limited view of what opportunities are available to them. By allowing them these opportunities, we hope to open their eyes and minds and broaden their horizons. If the kids succeed, we all win. I have two major pushes I would like to accomplish this year. The first of these is getting resources for some hands on science projects and experiments. i am looking forward to building and launching rockets with my students. As part of our curriculum in Science we discuss different types of models, force, and motion. These materials will be integrated into the science lesson to show the difference between two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. It will also allow the students to understand how force and motion work. We will use different types of rockets and engines to determine which flies the highest and discuss why. I would love for each student to build their own rocket and keep it as a memento after the project is over. This ties directly into the curriculum and we will be having a video chat with the Science Department at the Kennedy Space Center to further support the lesson. We are located an hour south of Cape Canaveral, but because of a lack of resources most of our students have never gotten to visit NASA. We are also working on getting funding for an end of the year field trip to the Kennedy Space Center for our students to tie it all together. I am also looking forward to starting a recycling and clean-up program around the school and planting a garden. Another push that I would like to implement is increasing the use of technology in my classroom. I would love to get a set of tablets for my students to use to work on their reading and math skills. We have a digital library available to the students but because of lack of resources it is barely used. I also have access to many different programs that the students could use on with the tablets. This would allow the students to grow academically and allow them have hand-on experience with technology, which only enhances their future prospects. Thanks for your consideration in adopting our classroom, Mr. Robert L. Suggs [email protected]
