Chrysanthemum Gate Needs Your Help

Chrysanthemum Gate is a play created by Andrew Sutherland (Australia) and Chanel Ariel Chan(Singapore). It will be presented as a part of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival Fresh Fringe line-up in January 2017.

"Theatre-makers Chanel Ariel Chan (Singapore) and Andrew Sutherland (Australia/Singapore) join together to interrogate contemporary rituals of sexuality, power and race in Singapore. From online hook-ups to theatre history, the performers spiral around one another in a contest of dominance and servitude, artifice and cultural appropriation, luxury and filth, and ‘flowers’ in profusion. Young, edgy and cruel, Chrysanthemum Gate is an intercultural exploration of the commodification of Asian bodies and of white bodies, and the blurred lines between the identities of the ‘east’ and the ‘west’."

First staged at Perth FRINGE WORLD in 2016 (where it was nominated for the Theatre Award), we are extremely excited to be presenting this work in Singapore, but need your help in supporting this staging! While grateful for the incredible support of the Festival, we need a little more in order to cover our expenses. So, we are hoping to raise more money to offset some of the financial load.

The money that we raise will go towards artist fees for this staging's Sound Designer, Visual Dramaturg, and Photographer/Videographer, rehearsal space hire, a partial off-setting of flight costs between Australia and Singapore, and prop/costume elements.

Unfortunately the tickets for this staging of Chrysanthemum Gate are sold out as we only have one performance with the Festival. For donors based in Singapore that did not have a chance to buy tickets and wish to see the performance, please contact us at [email protected] and we will keep in touch regarding re-sold tickets via the Festival marketplace page, or other opportunities to see or engage with the work.

We are hoping to further develop for future staging in Singapore and internationally. All donors will be notified of any future productions. We really hope all our donors who helped us will get a chance to see this show.
