My name is Christine Chu. I am a transgender activist in Hong Kong.

As a law student, I have been passionate about gender-related legal issues and promoting gender equality. In February 2023, I founded an online platform, the Hong Kong Trans Law Database (www.hktranslawdb.org), as a way to introduce legal considerations into the discourse about gender-related issues and offer a pathway for the public to understand the transgender community. By establishing this database, I hope to facilitate gender laws reform by the government and ultimately, create a fairer and more inclusive society.

Gender-affirming surgery is neither the only nor necessary treatment for gender dysphoria. However, it is sometimes a key to the mental health and quality of life of some transgender individuals. Currently, under Hong Kong law, gender-affirming surgery is still the only way to amend gender markers on identity cards and passports. Transgender individuals like me who have not undergone gender-affirming surgery will be treated as "male" as stated in the identity card.

I suffer from gender dysphoria since I was small. At a very young age, I began to realize myself as being "trapped in the wrong body". Since then, I suffered from mental distress and various kinds of gender dysphoria. Discrimination against transgender individuals is also omnipresent in Hong Kong society. Fortunately, I could finally begin my gender-affirming healthcare with hormones-affirming treatment, as well as social transition, with the help of local NGOs and doctors in the private sector.

Gender-affirming healthcare is not covered by insurance in Hong Kong. The monthly cost of hormone drugs with medical consultation is around HK$1,100. It is unbearable for a full-time student. My financial pressure from undergoing a gender-affirming surgery has severely affected my mental health and created much distress for me. To undergo a gender-affirming surgery in Bangkok costs around US$9,800 (i.e. HK$77,000), excluding accommodation and transportation fees.

Since coming out as "trans", my parents have refused to sponsor my medical and daily expenses. I have some savings (around HK$5,000). Even then, I need to raise HK$72,000 to be able to pay for surgery.

The surgery will change my life and I will continue to shine the world with my life. I promised to make changes to the Hong Kong community, to create a more diverse and harmonious society. I believe things can be better and the world can be prettier, and I am asking for your help to bring back joy to my life.

Love,

Christine
