Children’s Book On Jewish Unity

THE POLLUTION:

Your child wants to know: Why do our neighbors talk about G-d so much? Why does that couple drive to Synagogue every Shabbat? Does that black hatted Rabbi speak English? (Is he normal?) Is someone who eats cheeseburgers on Yom Kippur allowed to light the Menorah on Chanukah? She dresses so differently than me, what can I have in common with her? When will that community start to be like us?

ENOUGH! ENOUGH!!

Our Jewish nation is too small to be divided! We need to recognize that we're one, back each other up, respect and love one another. 

THE SOLUTION:

I've written a fun, deep, colorful-charactered, rhyming storybook for children on the topic of Jewish unity. (No better way for adults to get the message than nightly readings to your child ;)) Called "Mendel My Friend'l", the story is about a 5 year old boy who moves with his family from the Jewish community he is comfortable in to a foreign one, in order to bring the light and love of Torah to those not exposed to it. His loneliness and despair in his new setting is brief for he quickly identifies and collects new friends -- friends that are not his age, don't share the same background, have different beliefs and lead vastly different lifestyles. He discovers and then publicly declares that just as the fingers on a hand that, though named individually, work in unison to accomplish any goal, so too us Jewish people -- we are one family that must look out for each other and support one another.

THE CONCLUSION:

This manuscript has begun the process of repair in our communities to those that have test-read it. Parents have opened dialogues with their children and teachers with students, about the power of the Jewish soul, our responsibility for one another and the friendships we can form with others in our faith.
