I have written a children's picture book about childhood hearing loss. I worked for 23 years as a clinical audiologist in Canada, England, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia so I am very aware of the stigma still attached to hearing loss. My book, 'And So Ahmed Hears', was published as a humanitarian project in Canada in 2008. The book is not for sale, but is available to Canadian families only and on request. It is also available to the general public as a downloadable PDF. I currently live in Mongolia where I teach English as an additional language to young children. Audiology is and always will be a part of who I am. I have had the opportunity to visit a number of ENT clinics here in Mongolia and am aware of how rudimentary the hearing healthcare services are, particularly for children. I have convinced my school to have a hearing screening program which is set to launch in the fall. I have had my book translated into Mongolian and am now seeking an artist to re-illustrate it with Mongolian children and a Mongolian setting. I will also need a publisher to publish it. My plan is to have the book published (ideally locally) and to sell it with all proceeds donated to local charity OR used to improve hearing healthcare in the country. The latter could mean provision of hearing aids to children in need, funding for cochlear implants or funding to have a local professional pursue training abroad as an audiologist. The GoGetFunding donations would be used to pay for the illustrations and the publishing. Any leftover funds would go to charity, to the purchase of hearing aids or toward the education of an audiologist. This is a dream. I believe that dreams can come true and I hope this one will for the people of Mongolia and their very special children.
