Chester’s Battle Against Leukemia

On September 25, 2019, Chester Ocampo “Che” (35 years of age) was brought to the emergency room due to sudden bleeding coming from his mouth and gums. Chester was working day and night prior to his daughter's first birthday party which is supposed to be held last October 11. Little did we know we were about to find a much more serious news any family could receive.

For what we thought was only a typical infection, Chester's blood test resulted with a very low count of blood platelets. Immediately a surgery was requested to take a sample of his bone marrow and rule out all possible causes.

After a week, the doctor was able to confirm that Chester has an Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APML) which is a type of cancer found in the blood and the bone marrow. The high number of abnormal white blood cells are not able to fight infection, and they impair the ability of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells and platelets.

Chester has started chemotherapy and the treatment is done multiple times in a week and he will also undergo multiple blood transfusion.

It had flipped the world upside down for his and the family. We cannot imagine how hard he must be going through. This journey may take a couple of years while the doctors are optimistic about his prognosis, the road that lies ahead will be long and not without significant physical, emotional and financial challenges.
