Adson Tumusime - The story of how I came to join SPP, my inspiration and background...for Chess,Travel, and Livelihood development (sport, tourism, and social works, orphanage)

From coach Adson: I believe any sport is connected to traveling. I found Slum Ping Pong on FB and wrote to Emmanuel (Coach Emma TT) to see if he was interested in working together since we have similar work, and inspiration for wanting to help kids who are in need. I offered my coaching services and knowledge for free for the months of December and January for Slum Ping Pongs holiday camp.

Many kids were happy and excited to learn chess. Many kids who do not play ping pong all day or want something else to learn and practice now had chess to engage their minds.

Benefits of chess:

Brain development, concentration, critical thinking, strategizing, fun, brings kids together, creates community, challenging their minds. Chess also helps with confidence, and school scholarships possible for those who excell.

I love kids and being with them teaching them a new skill, and am aiming to use chess to change lives just like Slum Ping Pong does with Table Tennis.

Chess is one tool we use to avoid negative social consequences that come with growing up in the slums in Kampala, Uganda. I.E. early marriage, peer pressure to engage with sex and drugs, and early drop outs.

SLUM PING PONG BACKGROUND

Slum Ping pong uses mainly Table Tennis to combat all of these issues as well as help kids with education and sponsoring them in School.

Slum Ping Pong is a registered nonprofit , started in Nsambya, Kampala Uganda using mainly Table Tennis and chess to bring positive social change to children and mothers living in slums as a way of breaking the cycle of poverty. We are using table tennis as a way to help benefit the kids with education (school fees), talent identification(modeling, acting), fighting drug abuse, early pregnancy, school dropouts, juvenile crimes, menstrual education for girls, teen heath, teaching human rights, gender equality, vocational training, dance, and arts, through different programs as well as free Table Tennis classes and training in KCCA schools and Slum communities & rural areas.

Slum Ping Pong runs on private Individual donors, of equipment and financial support in order to run our programs. We have a GREAT need of financial support and equipment because of the numbers of kids and families we serve. Currently there are over 300 kids who play Table Tennis and Chess on a daily basis and only 20% of them have the equipment needed to play. The need is always greater than what we have so we are starting this campaign to fulfill the need of equipment school fees and coaches support, along with a health cost fund to benefit kids and coaches in emergencies.

We have two locations in Kampala at railways primary school and Police children's school, as well as one location for the last year in Iganga.

We run using used equipment and clothes from different TT clubs and individuals in Germany, France, Norway, Greece, Sweden, United States etc, but we are still severely lacking in equipment and funds.

Current curriculum at SPP includes table tennis and fitness, yoga and meditation, dance and hip hop/ afro dance, art (drawing, painting) vocational skills like knitting and sewing, chess, and life skills including swimming, and teen health awareness classes.

Here is a list of what we will use our $ to provide and purchase to keep our programs going and expand two more new locations TBA.
