When Cher Herrera went to the local pound near her home in Bacolod City in the Philippines, she was looking to save the stray dog that she’d been feeding because he’d stopped coming around. Although she didn’t see his familiar face, she did see the faces of dozens of desperate dogs who were doomed to be euthanized.

Cher knew she had to do something, and wanted to save at least some of their lives. She began calling to the dogs to see which ones would respond, but when a whole group of them looked up at her hopefully, tails wagging, she knew she had to adopt them…and ended up bringing 13 home!

Despite rescuing over a dozen dogs, Cher could not stop thinking about the others who remained, waiting for their fate. So when her paycheck arrived a few days later, she went straight to the pound, and adopted a whopping 62 dogs!

Cher lives in a humble home with her brother, two nieces, one nephew, and her two rescue golden retrievers, Echo and Faith. But she never once worried about how she’d care for 75 dogs, knowing that the dog lovers of the community would help. And little did she know that before long, her story would touch hearts around the world. People began pitching in with food donations, and a friend even agreed to temporarily house many of the dogs.

At the moment, over half of these dogs have been adopted, and they continue finding homes, day after day. However, there are over a dozen who still need help being re-socialized, having dealt with past trauma, and Cher continues to care for 13 of the rescued pups under her own roof. She hopes to set up a small sanctuary to rehabilitate those dogs that need a little extra time to readjust before finding their forever homes.

Cher paid for all 75 dogs’ adoption and vaccination fees out of her own pocket, and continues to cover the expenses of those that have yet to find their forever families. If you would like to help this hero offset some of these costs, as well as continue to provide care for dogs in need, please feel free to donate here.

STOP KILLING THE DOGS Petition.

Update posted by Cherry May Herrera at 02:02 pm

I am not against with my government by catching stray dogs to ensure public safety, what I was just trying to do is at least do something instead killing them. What if we ask for help to conduct massive campaign like vaccine the dogs for anti rabies and neuter to control. . . . .
