Hi, my name is Cristy. Our family is blessed with big numbers - 8 siblings in total. We live different lives as we reside from diff locations around the Philippines. Our family is very simple but like any other families out there, we have our own share of challenges and difficulties. When I was young, I lost my mother to Breast Cancer. She was our only financial support. We are filipinos; we are resilient; thus life goes on.

We celebrated Christmas and New Year with a positive spirit that we would have a good year ahead then January 10, 2017 happened. My 29 year old brother, Ryan Rivera, was not feeling well all throughout the holidays. By January 10, he was already vomiting blood, which prompted us to bring him to the nearest hospital. We were referred to different hospitals in Cavite and then later on in Manila. Finally he was admitted at Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. He got platelet and blood transfusion and he was feeling okay so we started to hope. However, I already felt that the doctors are hiding something from us. After several lab tests, our worst fear came true; he was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

There is nothing worst than knowing, for a family who lost their beloved mother to cancer, that they will again fight the same monster.

T-cell immunophenotype of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an uncommon aggressive leukemia that can present with leukemic and/or lymphomatous manifestations. The use of pediatric intensive combination chemotherapy regimens in adolescents and young adults has significantly improved the outcome of patients with T-ALL. Thus, his Oncologist advised us that he needs to undergo immediate chemo. We know very well about the side effects of chemo but we have no other choice. The treatment of adults with ALL has resulted in survivals of only 40%. We are just a simple family with no immediate means of support for this kind of expensive treatment but it is the only treatment available. We want him to live. He is too young to die. He is not even married yet. He is at his prime.

This is gonna be a long fight, though we already lost once to cancer, we will continue to hope that this time, LIFE WILL WIN.

That is why we are asking for your help. Please help us win this fight. We will forever be thankful.

Complications from previous surgery and continued hospitalization

Update posted by Cristy Rivera at 03:35 am

My brother is still hanging on. However he developed pneumonia from staying in a private hospital so we did our best to move him to a charity ward in a private hospital. He will undergo chemo as soon as his infection clears out. That is why we are really pushing. . . . .
