PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR CHAVAKALI ROYAL SCHOOL

1.HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE INSTITUTION

Chavakali Royal School is a junior school found in Western Region, Vihiga County, Sabatia Constituency part of Kenya. It was established in 2011. The Director, Mercy Adema Lugariki is a born again Christian who had a vision to provide low cost quality education to pupils from the rural areas. Mercy is a teacher by profession and has taught various private and public schools. She however had to resign from formal employment to concerntrate on serving the children fully. Mercy trained as a primary school teacher from Highridge Teachers College (2004-2006) graduating with a certificate in education. She later acquired a Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Elian ECDE College (2012-2013). She has completed her bachelors in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi (was unable to gradute last year for lack of fees). Mercy was raised as an orphan having lost both parents at a young age. The father died when she was 3 years old and later the mother. She understands the challenges people go through since she had the experience of bringing up 3 of her siblings at a tender age who by the grace of God are now grown up. The school was doing better when she was employed as she would support it with her salary and also farm produce. Currently, and after the covid pandemic they are really struggling to make ends meet.Due to the financial constrains among many residence around the school, the school currently has 40 pupils ranging from kindergarten to Primary Grade 6(An average of 8 pupils per class). Most pupils did not report back after covid. Out of these, 23 pupils are supported by the school & don’t pay fees at all. (We would have wished to support more but we are unable to afford do that) The rest pay a fees of Ksh. 5,000 ($50) for a period of 3 months meant to pay the staff (17 of them) and also feed the children and the members of staff. It’s a complete struggle. Staff turn –over is very high since the school mostly struggles to pay them.

The school is found in:

PLACE: Near Chavakali Market, behind Ahulwo Plaza.

COUNTY: Vihiga.

NATION: Kenya.

It’s on a partly rented piece of land (0.06 ha) and owned (0.03 ha). The structures are semi-permanent, half covered with irosheets. On the rented piece of land we pay an annual rent of ksh. 240,000 ($2,400) which we have been given a notice to vacate. The staff is supposed to be paid a sum of ksh. 3,060,000 ($30,600) but end up just taking whatever the school may have at that moment.

INCOME OF THE PEOPLE

Residents of Chavakali and nearby areas are low income earners for those who work and a majority are jobless. People here struggle to make ends meet.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Due to the status of the area most people here struggle to put a 3 meal a day on the table. This affects the health of the children.

We came in to bridge the gap between high cost schools and public schools which are so congested and compromise on the quality of education.

3. PROBLEM STATEMENT

We came in to bridge the gap between high cost schools and public schools which are so congested and compromise on the quality of education. The director had a passion for quality education with Christian values intergrated. To bring up children in the ways of God and transform a whole being.

4.JUSTIFICATION

This project benefits the people of Chavakali by offering a day care for the children, employment to the staff, eliminates illiteracy, models the right Christian values in children hence when they grow up they will in turn model more and hence a sober Christian. The food we eat comes from the community hence help them also put a meal on their table.

5. TIME FRAME

The school began in 2011 and it’s a continous project wuth no defined time frame.

6.OBJECTIVES

OUR MOTTO: Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge.

OUR VISION: To be the leading school in Kenya in the provision of quality Kinderagartten and Primary Education.

OUR MISSION: To provide a holistic education that enables each learner to acquire knowledge and to develop a social and moral values through a friendly learning environment where professionals help the pupils to realize his/her highest potential.

7.STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE THE PROJECT

Given a one-acre piece of land (minimum requirement for a primary school to operate in Kenya), with support we shall put up permanent structures(12 classrooms, a sleeping bay for babies, a music room, an art room, a computer room,a library, a staffroom, 3 offices and a dining room) and where possible a boarding school to help rescue the children from abusive parents.

Means of school transport; a bus and a school van will help us ferry children who would wish to join us from far places.

Though there may be unforeseen issues like we had in covid-19, droughts and mechanical breakdown of vehicles, the school will be growing to handle that.
