"I wondered why somebody didn't do something. Then I realized, I am somebody" Author Unknown
We are two teenagers that want to make a difference in the world - Jorin Larsen - age 15 and Jantzen Larsen - age 13. We have collected shoes for the orphans in Burkina Faso, Africa. Our original goal for this project was to gather at least 350 pairs. We accomplished after the first week. We put out drop boxes and checked them every 3 days. We have done more than 12 neighborhood drives - delivering garbage bags and a flyer describing the project to each door - and then returning the next day to pick up the filled bags off of porches. Family in 6 states sent shoe contributions. Friends gathered to collect and band shoes. Hundreds of manhours have been spent on this project. Due to this phenomenal community and family support, we have currently amassed over -
12,700 pairs of shoes!
Burkina Faso is the third poorest country on the globe. It is a desperately poor, land-locked country with few resources. The average age is sixteen years old. Of the 16 million people, approximately 1 millon are orphaned or abandoned. Most do not have shoes. Shoes can protect from soil borne diseases, worms, and injuries that can lead to infection. They are also often required for school attendance..
After the project was completed, we set a new goal. We want to aactually deliver shoes and work with the orphans. We have the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Burkina Faso with Dando Amor, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping orphans world-wide. We will be able to personally help the orphans in the following ways:
*We will distribute shoes that we have collected
*We will distribute food, mosquito nets and other beneficial supplies.
*We will plant trees and provide donkeys to individuals and communities
*We will visit orphanages, assess needs, and give the orphans much needed love and care.
When we heard about the poverty and needs in Burkina Faso, we wanted to make a difference! We feel that because we have the ability to help, we also have the responsibility to help. We have been given so much in our lives. We have good parents, a home, shoes and clothing, an education and so much more.
We are collecting donations to help us pay for our mission trip. Will you please help us help them?
Thank you so much!
Jorin and Jantzen Larsen
