Mental health is a commonly misunderstood aspect of a person’s entire well- being. Invariably, this misunderstanding leads to different issues such as neglecting self-care and stigmatizing mental disorders. As the conversation on mental health has become a growing issue in the Philippines, there is then a need to push this conversation into concrete ways of spreading information and raising awareness on the realities of mental health.
This year, a group of young leaders formed a coalition that is currently working towards the fruition of a mental health awareness caravan and a Cebu Mental Health Week. The school caravan is called Hisgut M.H. (A Mental Health Awareness Caravan), which aims to deepen the youth’s understanding on mental health and further address the recurring mental health stigma in the society by providing educational components to different schools in Cebu City. Further, the event will have a symposium bringing in speakers to the participating schools to talk about Mental Health specifically on depression, anxiety, and stress management. This caravan is happening from September to October, and will be going to ten different schools in Cebu.
The school caravan will culminate with a week-long series of mental health awareness events from October 13 to 20, 2018. This week includes a mental health expo where psychological service providers, mental health advocates and wellness institutions will set up booths to share their services. Throughout the week, there will also be spoken poetry night talks, trivia nights, and most importantly, talks and forums from professionals to spread awareness about mental health. Below is the schedule of events.
We, the organizers and volunteers of Cebu Mental Health Week, are all mental health advocates who believe in the issue we are working towards. As such, to make this entire event a success and increase awareness, we would need resources and are doing this by conducting fundraising efforts. We are reaching out to you to ask for your support in this big event. We hope your generous heart will support this important cause.
If you wish to know more about the project, our mission and the people behind this, we would gladly discuss this. Feel free to reach us via our Facebook page or email.
