Hi! Thank you for taking a moment to look at my profile. My name is Kateryna (or as I am more used to be called now – Catherine) and I am originally from Ukraine. My story is the one about a big dream and breaking the limits. And if you agree with that “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “I’m possible”, please consider helping me out.

WHAT

Studying at the University of St Andrews.

HOW MUCH

£23,910 for the tuition fees + £6,484 for the accommodation costs.

( £30,394 or $33,955)

MY STORY

For as long as I can remember myself I’ve been dreaming about studying in the UK. I would be learning poetry by Lord Byron and Robert Burns by heart and teaching myself Scottish and Irish dancing. And despite being from Ukraine and having no money whatsoever I managed to find the HMC Scholarships in Central and Eastern Europe. After I was selected as one of the 5 Ukrainian students to get this scholarship that year, I started a life-changing journey at Woodhouse Grove School. These have been the greatest, and yet the hardest two years of my life, and I cannot possibly be more grateful for the people I met there and the experiences that certainly made me more of the Catherine I am now. Moving to the UK has proven to me that nothing is impossible.

Furthermore, it turned out that it was “ I’m possible” to receive offers from the University of St Andrews, Durham, Edinburgh and Queen's Belfast! St Andrews unique degree encompasses my greatest passions: Scottish History and Italian. And I believe I would make a valuable contribution studying there, as I have developed conceptual clarity through History Olympiads and analytical skills through critically engaging activities, such as the annual Colloquium at the Karazin Kharkiv National University, where I delivered a speech on the Crusades, later published in the colloquium miscellany. Through the All-Ukrainian Research Paper Defense Competition I learned how to conduct research, engage with sources, produce academic work and present it to the jury and wider audience, as well as had my theses published. This contributed to my desire to pursue a career in History, which was decisively determined by the All-Ukrainian Historical Tournament, as the months spent researching, preparing reports and debating shaped me intellectually and personally, leading to my team taking 1st place in the country and me being named as the best opponent and orator of the season. I further worked on these skills in the UK, when I had an honour of representing my school and Bradford at the Great Debate finals held at Windsor Castle. I believe these experiences would allow me to make the most of studying Scottish History.

Linguistics is an integral part of my life, as seen in my current exposure to English within the UK and my German A-level. The decision to pursue Italian came last year as I arranged a language exchange in which I taught my partner Russian and he taught me French and Italian. This introduced me to the structure of the language and boosted my interest in Italian culture. I believe studying Italian literature will not only fulfil my thirst for languages, but also facilitate my history studies, as it would allow me to directly access the works of early Renaissance scholars, 15 th century humanists and 16th century authors like Machiavelli and Castiglione.

In addition to that, I intend to take Psychology as the third subject for my sub-honours, as my ability to apply psychological theories to further my analysis of historical events was illustrated in my EPQ, where I considered whether Henry VIII was a mad tyrant or “the man full of heart”. My cross-curricular approach allows me to offer St Andrews’ academic community a fresh perspective on the disciplines I’m immensely enthusiastic about.

MAKE MY IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE

My predicted grades (A*A*A*A) give me the confidence that I will confirm my offer, as soon as the official grades are released. The only issue I’m facing at the moment is the financial side of it. £23,910 a year for the tuition fees and some £6,484 for accommodation are far beyond an average Ukrainian income, and even further beyond that of my mum, who is a single parent. Being classed as an international student, I am not eligible for a student loan in the UK and Ukraine doesn’t provide any financial support for undergraduates either, so despite holding an offer, in practice, my chances of attending St Andrews are slim to none.

I know that if I’m given a chance I will make the most of this degree and make a valuable contribution not only to the matters of the Scottish Historiography, but to the wider society. I want to bring History and language learning closer to people. I’ve already started doing that by teaching English and giving free lectures at the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University based on my A-level knowledge. It is this degree which will allow me to achieve my highest potential and improve the world around me as much as I possibly can. Please, help me make my impossible possible!

Take care and stay safe!
Catherine
