Carrie and Jessie’s Run for Cancer Research

Carrie and Jessie are next door neighbor turned friends, who met and connected through their toddlers and their common passion of healthy living. The two of them meet every Friday for some running therapy on Bowen Road. Although marathons and many other fundraisers have been cancelled this year due to covid, Carrie and Jessie are well aware of the continuous needs of many NGOs and will be running their own 5k in midlevels on December 4th to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation, which will fund important cancer research here in Hong Kong.

It has been 1.5 years since Carrie’s cancer diagnosis, and the trauma and fear of illness as well as lingering side effects from intensive treatment still impacts her everyday. Stiff joints, memory loss, a numb chest and arms and many other low estrogen problems have now become a new norm requiring a lot of daily effort of overcome. As time passes regular life resumes, but we can’t let the pursuit for improvement stop there. The news of new battles among fellow cancer patients and seeing some lose those battles makes us question why in our age of advanced technology, the search for a cure is so far away?

After 39 weeks of a happy beautiful pregnancy, in September 2020 Jessie gave birth to a baby boy, Joshua Swain, who was stillborn. The passing of Joshua has been most difficult for Jessie’s family as they were shocked and unprepared for this result amidst a healthy pregnancy. The worst part is not even getting a chance to know him and raise him. They miss him dearly, struggling everyday to give meaning to this tragedy, and finding ways to help the memory of their son live on. In honor of baby Joshua, we will be humbly donating to this meaningful organization in his name, to help his legacy live on long and strong. Hopefully through Joshua’s donation, the 30,000 people diagnosed with cancer every year in Hong Kong can see a greater hope for a cure!

While 5K is not a long distance, it is simply our gesture to show how much we need your support to help this cause. We will run our hearts out with prayers to all our amazing donors and beneficiary patients in mind.
