I was diagnosed with kidney failure and cyst on the liver in October 2018. My kidney had shrank to 3%.
How it started:
I didn't have much symptoms, it started with feeling ill. I decided to going to a private doctor who diagnosed me with bronchitis.
At the time I was not on any Medical Aid.
A day or two later I went to a government hospital as I knew they did blood test there and they will be able to determine what was wrong with me.
Once at the government hospital they determined that I have a 3% usage of my one kidney and cyst on my liver. I was placed in the hospital ward for four days.
The government doctors had a meeting with Groote Schuur hospital doctors (as this hospital has a kidney unit and is a government run hospital too.)
The hospital declined to have me as a patient, there are many reasons why they decline this, one reason could be there is a long waiting list the other could be that is is a complicated procedure, they are many other reasons.
A doctor from the kidney team who was looking after me advised my parents and I that there is nothing they are able to do for me and gave me a pack of tablets and said I have Six months to life.
I was at home for a week then decided to get a second a opinion from a private doctor. The doctor took more blood test.
The private doctor was very concerned and called the government head doctor who's team dealt with my case.
The government hospital should of never discharged me and should of given me advice on what to do where to go etc. Because I did not have medical aid and my parents does not have any money the government hospital decided to send me home with six months to life.
So from there the government doctor had a meeting with myself and my family explaining that they should not have sent me home! He advised if I can pay for the dialysis each session and get set up and go to Rondebosch Medic Clinc Kidney Unit, I can then be able to live. He also advised without the money to pay I wont be able to survive.
I said let's do it.
So the only way I can survive is by paying R 1 600 every time I go for dialysis session which is twice or sometimes 3 times a week plus doctor's fees per month. I also had a catheter (this is pipes they put in your body and it is just above the skin so you can connect to the dialysis machine) put in which was R4000.
Even though I am the only person working in my household I had to do this as my health comes first.
The next step was that the government doctor made an appointment with the doctor at Rondebosch Medic Clinic Kidney Unit. I then had the operation to have the catheter put in and started on the dialysis machine the next day.
I have applied for medical aid now but I can only use that in a years time.
Once I find a donor for a Kidney I would then need to pay half of the operation which is plus minus R40 000.
That is my story and if you would like to sponsor me it would be greatly appreciated.
