MY GOAL:

Raise enough money to fund an individual's recovery program (3-6 month Rehabilitation) by completing the Freedom Swim/Robben Island Swim (7.5km swim) + extended CT Cycle Tour Route (140km cycle) + Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56km) in one day.

Some background:

- I founded a NGO, called the Carlstrong Foundation - in memory of my brother who was murdered 5 years ago.(25 November 2015)

- Foundation is very much in its infancy stage - but use my endurance sporting events to create awareness and assist people who have been subject to violent crime, as well as people who suffer from mental illness and other emotional disorders and traumas.

- I also use the platform (Carlstrong Foundation) to assist individuals that are in need of help for various other reasons (raising funds for a cancer patient, raising funds for person suffering with glaucoma, not really limited to anything, so long as it can make a positive difference in someone's life)

- I have successfully completed 5 x consecutive Ironman 140.6, 5 x Comrades Marathons, 5 x 2 Oceans Ultra's Marathons (along with numerous marathons and ultra marathon events in between - 50odd marathons, Puffer, Transbaviaans etc) - with the goal of doing 10 x consecutive Ironmen, Comrades and 2 Oceans.

The Reality:

“Its okay, not to be okay, but it's not okay to be okay when you're not okay”

Depression, Bipolar, Mental Health disorders, PTSD, Suicide, Addiction, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorders… the list goes on.

These are all very common, yet very much stigmatized problems we ALL have to face, either directly or indirectly. These issues, sometimes debilitating, can be triggered by various ordeals and/or circumstances, but also you could simply be born with it, I’m no expert on that – but what I can say is; there is not one person that I know who doesn’t, or doesn’t know of someone dealing with some sort of mental or emotional issue – big or small. It’s unfortunately a reality we need to face – but not be scared to face either. Fact is, mental and emotional disorders CAN be treated and managed – whatever it is you are dealing with and/or suffering from is not the path you have to be on forever.

Over the past few years I have faced and dealt with, both directly and indirectly, a lot of emotional trauma and I’ve first handedly witnessed the severe impacts it has on individuals lives and those closest to them.

I came to realize, and turned out to be a valuable life lesson too, that not everyone is strong – even those that seem to be. Everyone has the potential to be strong (emotionally), but not everyone has the strength invested in them and the know how – at least not without the necessary help and support they need – to face emotional traumas and mental issues.

I’ve been fortunate enough to find ways and means of building and creating my own emotional strength – it comes pretty easy to me, but what may seem easy and very straight forward for me – may seem daunting and virtually impossible to someone else. Not because they can’t achieve the emotional stability they seek - but rather because they are in genuine need of professional help & support – which comes with a hefty price tag.

Many of you are probably not aware – but you will battle to find a reputable recovery/rehabilitation facility that charges less than R120 000 for a 3 month program (if you do, please get in touch).
Even with a mint medical aid scheme – you will be lucky if a third of it is covered. Ironically – a large portion of mental health suffers are from low LSM groups – unable to afford hospital cover, never mind specialized mental treatment.

So what is my goal, what is it that I am wanting to achieve?

My goal in taking on this challenge is to raise awareness of mental health issues/disorders & emotional trauma and the severe impact it has on people, to challenge everyone out there who part takes in sporting events, to dedicate their races to a cause that is close to their hearts, to give people, who are in dark places, who are hitting rock bottom some hope and inspiration - but ultimately it is to change a person’s life forever, by raising enough funds to pay for a full recovery/rehabilitation treatment.

One day of pain, to end a lifetime of suffering – that’s how I see it!
