Campaign Story
Given Gogetfunding and Paypal limitations (can no longer accept after 120 days), we have moved the campaign to a new page: https://fundrazr.com/caren-cancer-fund . Other contribution options are also listed below our story (bank, BTC).
In January this year, my wife, Caren, was diagnosed with Stage III C breast cancer. After seeking out different medical opinions and possible alternative treatments, she decided to undergo the conventional and accepted standard, which involves surgery, Chemotherapy, and radiation.
Given her cancer type (ER-, PR+ and HER2+), Caren will benefit from Herceptin, a targeted treatment. HER2+ also means the cancer is relatively aggressive, thus timely and proper protocols/treatment are necessary for her continued good health.
Caren had surgery in late January, thanks to support from the community. She started Chemotherapy in March, and has so far completed four cycles of Doxorubicin and Cyclophosphamide.
The second phase of her Chemotherapy would be crucial, both in terms of treatment and expense -- four cycles of Docetaxel and 18 cycles of Herceptin (first four to coincide with Docetaxel). For one, the first phase has taken a toll on Caren's energy. The two drugs are also known to be very strong.
We were able to raise a modest amount from the community in January. We would like to raise additional resources to help her with the succeeding treatments.
Herceptin is expensive, at around P100,000 per vial (about US$2,000). Roche's patient support program usually provides either a discount or up to 9 cycles free, although the free cycles come during the middle of the treatment protocol. As we do not have medical insurance, we also sought assistance from agencies like the PCSO, which approved us for one partial support so far. This means having to pay this expense out-of-pocket for medication and professional fees.
We are therefore asking the community for assistance once more, so that Caren can receive the best and timely care.
Why help Caren?
- We have five beautiful children (two in high school, one in grade school, and two small kids). A full-time mom, Caren wants to see them grow.
- She has given so much time and effort in sharing her child-care and breastfeeding experiences, especially with other mothers.
- We cannot do it alone, but when the community pitches in, together we can do great things!
Please do Contribute
If you cannot help financially, we will understand. But we would appreciate help in spreading the word through social and other means.
Crowdfunding Platform Update
Note that I have moved the crowdfunding campaign to GoGetFunding, because our previous crowdfunding provider, YouCaring, has been acquired and no longer supports campaigns from outside the US.

Pneumonia, heart condition, hospital stay
Update posted by Angelo Racoma at 08:45 amWe would again like to seek some help, in terms of contributions and social shares (hoping this reaches the right people).Since Friday, Caren has been admitted at the hospital being treated for pneumonia, and doctors have found that she now has a drug-induced heart condition, which they are trying to. . . . .
Almost Halfway There
Update posted by Angelo Racoma at 10:15 amHello everyone.I'd like to take this opportunity to ask for another round of social shares for our crowdfunding campaign. For Caren's past 3 cycles, we've been receiving PCSO subsidy of P70K, which is a big help considering each cycle costs P130K (83k of this is Herceptin, plus the rest is. . . . .
