In the last 3 months, we've co-ordinated the collection and distribution of thousands of coats, blankets, shoes, food parcels, tents, torches, cooking items, building materials and many other items that people have generously donated. Since then, the number of people in the camp has doubled to well over 6,000 and with winter upon us the need is greater than ever.

It has been a steep learning curve. Understanding what is needed, how to organise donations and how to distribute the items fairly and with dignity takes time. So now we are running a highly efficient system to cope with regular donations and the emergencies that arise on a daily basis.

Your donations have helped us to lease our own warehouse in Calais for sorting and storage, two vans to get what people need quickly into the camp and systems to support the many hundreds of volunteers who have now worked with us. All this has helped improve the flow of essential items to the camp and we're humbled both by your generosity and the resilience of the people we are supporting.

Clare, you and others are doing an amazing job. Hope you are managing to get time off over Christmas for a break and a rest. Love Sue and Ted x

We have most of the equipment we need and probably enough money to buy the rest. We have someone to run the cooking who has impressive experience of this type of large scale catering - its not like running a restaurant - and he can deliver hot highly nutritious meals for cost of 50p (!) each. We also have more volunteers coming from the UK who can help with preparation, washing up etc. We plan to start with 400meals/day so the key thing now is ongoing finance. It will cost 200/day for ingredients plus gas costs. This will go through money super quick, and ideally we would like to scale up to more than 400/day asap. So we really need your help!

We won't need a marquee for the food distribution - refugees within the camp have offered to build one for us! In particular, Zimako (who built the school) and David (who built the Christian church) will lead the effort. The skills they have are awesome. They use branches from trees, waste wood and cardboard to build a structure. Cover it with tarpaulin and bin bags, secure with string and tape and anything else they can scavenge. but the structures are unbelievably sound! Most impressive.

We have just heard that John Bishop will perform at the Liverpool Echo area on 19 September at an event organised by the British Red Cross and the Mayor of Liverpool in aid of the refugee crisis. This is brilliant news! If celebrities like John Bishop get involved it will do so much to change people?s perceptions and counter all the bigotry and bad press out there. It really is the best thing to happen for someone like this to get involved ? laughter is the best medicine for bad feelings and his support will really bring people together.

Well done and thank you so much John!

John Bishop has told us he is happy to support Care4Calais!
