A few years ago my papa had been diagnosed with Chronic Renal Disease Stage V secondary to Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis and was on renal replacement therapy for twice a week. His hemodialysis treatment takes four hours duration. During the treatment the blood will flow through the needle from the vascular access (AV fistula) to the dialysis machine then it goes through a filter called a dialyzer which removes waste and extra fluid. Once it has been cleaned, the blood travels back to the body through the other needle. It was painful for me to look at him everytime those two needles are being inserted on his left arm but my papa is such a fighter and he endures it because that’s the only thing that can sustain his life.

During those past years, I’ve witnessed how my papa struggled to fight for his illness. He and my mama would wake up early in the morning to travel for an hour from our hometown in order to reach his hemodialysis schedule at our provincial hospital’s dialysis center located in Iloilo City. My papa also managed to limit his fluid intakes by maintaining at least 500ml of liquid a day. If he goes beyond the boundary then he will experience difficulty in breathing and retain water in his body. Despite of our financial instability we never missed any single hemodialysis treatment for him. By God’s grace, papa had reached seven years of undergoing such treatment. However, last November 25, 2019 when he was about to go to sleep at night he suddenly felt weakness on his upper right extremity. Mama saw him slowly losing his balance and I ran immediately towards him to check his blood pressure. We’ve noticed that he can’t move his right arm and he can’t utter any word. His saliva started draining on the right side of his mouth. Thus, we rushed him to the nearest local district hospital but then he was referred to the hospitals in Iloilo City for further evaluation and management. On that same night, they’ve performed CT scan, 2D Echo, and ECG and they’ve found out that papa had Ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs when an artery that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a blood clot or fatty buildup, called plaque. This blockage can appear at the neck or in the skull. Clots usually start in the heart and travel through the circulatory system. Aside from that, his Xray result also revealed that he has pneumonia. The next day he was referred to a neurologist.

We we’re supposed to be discharged after a week while being subjected for rehab. However, On Dec 1, he suffered from extreme difficulty in breathing which caused his heart to be congested. He underwent emergency intubation and renal replacement therapy. On Dec 4, he was referred to a pulmonologist and cardiologist. His sputum has been cultured and the result revealed that he was resistant to all antibiotics and was referred to infectious medical specialist. Last Dec 25, we turned one month in the hospital and his medications are still ongoing.

Why do we need support?

The expenses for his medical needs and hospital bills are really overwhelming. We have already utilized our resources and ran out of funds because his medicines especially the antibiotics that have high dosage are really expensive. The result of his blood culture revealed a zero growth of infectious bacteria. His pneumonia however, was still not cured. His doctors said that the progress has been really slow because of his renal failure. We felt like giving up but seeing him fighting for his life gives us strength and courage not to give up. We are still praying for papa’s recovery.
