With 3 hard, somtimes soul destroying, years of the Pilot Badger 'Cull' behind us. Its time to prepare for the 4th and final Badger killing spree in West Dorset. Time to dust off the walking boots (if they had actually had time to stop long enough to gather dust), to make sure all the tents are waterproofed and to shake the spiders out of sleepingbags! Its time once again to prepare to set up Camp Badger West Dorset to accommodate the dedicated, caring, crazy, beautiful people, some of which are in their 7th year of protecting our beautiful Badgers in Dorset and far beyond, but have grown to know our bit of Dorset as well as any of us. Some can only stay for a day or a weekend, some for a week or 2 and those who stay for the duration.
Some of our Badger Protectors come prepared with a small caravan or campervan and often very much appreciated, home made, vegan treats and and snacks. Some arrive with just a rucksack of clothes and a set of waterproofs, but thats ok. We try our hardest to make sure that at the very least everyone has somwhere dry to sleep and a good meal to set them up for their next shift. At times last year it was a challenge to hold the marquee roof on and stop the tents from blowing away in the horrendous wind and rain storms we were having. Sadly some equipment was destroyed along with personal belongings but defying the elements on some of those occasions resulted in memories that will stay with us forever!
We try not to dwell on the lives we weren't able to save, but to be happy for the ones we have saved over the years. The feeling when you discover a sett thought to be unactive is in fact still very much in use, finding a fresh Badger latrine is like finding a treasure, the ultimate prize is catching a glimse of the ones we are there to protect.
We couldnt do this without the hard work put in day and night rain or shine by a group of very special people.... that includes YOU, many of who have been supporting us since the day we began Badger Protection Group W, Dorset.
So once more we are asking you that if you can spare some time to come to camp or monitor Setts that may be close to you to please email [email protected]
If you are unable to join us then maybe you can donate towards equipment that we need to keep our Protectors safe out in the killing fields of West Dorset and fuel for vehicles, cooking and heating.
Finally please share our gogetfunding link as often as you can.
Stay safe and FSU
