Camille’s Odyssey

Friends,

As most of you know, I am leaving to travel the world for at least eight months at the end of February. As part of my trip, I will be visiting South America, New Zealand, Australia and Asia. However, worry not - I am not asking you to fund my year-long 'holiday' (!), but instead am aiming to raise money for some of the associations and volunteer projects I will be involved with along the way.

This includes the Fundacion Arte del Mundo, which promotes literacy and English-language speaking among Ecuadorian children, and the Ecoteer program for turtle conservation on the Perenthian Islands, off the coast of Malaysia. Both are ethical volunteer organisations which do not seek to make a profit from the projects they run, so all the money you (and I!) give is sure to go straight to the local community and to directly benefit the people/animals they try to help. In addition, I will also give a share of the total sum raised to the Mental Health Foundation before I leave.

I realise that one is usually supposed to pledge to run a marathon, climb a peak or some such venture in exchange for donations, but sadly I will not have time to undertake anything of the kind before I go... I suppose however that this whole journey is a challenge in itself, and I will take part in enough crazy adventures along the way (including glacier trekking, hiking the Inca Trail, black-water rafting etc)... BUT, if you need an extra incentive, I guess I could also promise to attempt a skydive if I manage to raise over £500! (Well, maybe).

So, please give generously (but not too much please - I'm really, really not good with heights..! ;-))

Comme vous le savez peut-être, je m'envolerai fin février pour un tour du monde de huit mois, au cours duquel je visiterai une grande partie de l'Amérique latine, la Nouvelle-Zélande, l'Australie, ainsi que certains pays d'Asie (et Helsinki, mais enfin c'est un peu moins exotique !).

Cependant, rassurez-vous: je ne vous demande pas de financer mes vacances prolongées (!), mais je lance à la place une collecte de fonds pour certaines des associations auprès desquelles je compte m'engager en tant que bénévole en chemin. Deux de ces organisations sont la Fundacion Arte del Mundo, qui combat l'illétrisme en Equateur, et le programme Ecoteer de sauvegarde des tortues sur les îles Périnthiennes, au large de la Malaisie. De plus, je prévois de reverser une petite partie de l'argent récolté à la Mental Health Foundation, ici au Royaume-Uni, avant mon départ.

Je sais bien que la coutume dans les pays anglo-saxons veut que l'on coure un marathon, fasse l'ascension d'une montagne ou autre défi du genre en échange de promesses de dons, mais malheureusement je n'aurai pas le temps d'entreprendre une épreuve de ce type avant de partir... cependant, mon tour du monde peut être vu comme un défi en soi, et je ne manquerai pas de me livrer à toutes sortes d'activités sportives en route (y compris une randonnée jusqu'au Macchu Picchu).
