Approximately 1 in 10 young people in Cambodia under the age of 18 are orphans. Not all the children at the orphanages are parentless but some come from abusive homes or from lone parent families who cannot afford to look after them. Many orphans are forced to beg, collect rubbish or enter the Cambodian child sex trade. This is a serious issue in Cambodia that the government and local NGOs are desperately trying to address. Although the number of orphans is in decline the lack of resources and funding available to the orphanages result in many children not receiving the sufficient level of care and support they need. Plan My Gap Year is an award winning international volunteer organization that supports an orphanage on the outskirts of Phnom Penh (Cambodia's capital city). There are around 60 children at the orphanage aged from 6 to 17 years of age.
I am heading off to this Cambodian village near Phnom Penh on the 19th of October, where I will volunteer for 6 weeks. As a volunteer I am in charge of playing with the children, teaching them English, providing them with the necessary support and helping out the locals in the duties around the orphanage.
I am aiming to raise £700 for this worthy cause. All the money will go directly to the orphanage and will be used to renovate the orphanage in order to make it a more habitable place for the children to live and to learn, as well as provide them with new and improved books, toys, medical supplies and feeding centres.
I would like to ask you all to donate as much or as little money as you can, any amount is appreciated and would definitely make a great difference to the lives of the Cambodian children.
Thank you all in advance!
