Cambodia is a country emerging from years of turmoil and civil unrest. It is one of the poorest countries in the world with around one third of Cambodians surviving on less than $2 a day. Approximately 1 in 10 young people in Cambodia under the age of 18 are orphans. Many orphans are forced to beg, collect rubbish or enter the Cambodian child sex trade. This is a serious issue in Cambodia that the government and local non-governmental organisations are desperately trying to address.
Not all of the children at the orphanages have lost their parents. Most have been taken into care as they arrive from abusive backgrounds, families that cannot afford to look after them or they have been rescued from human trafficking or the sex trade. Although the number of orphans is in decline the lack of resources and funding available to the orphanages result in many children not receiving the sufficient level of care and support they need.
Through the amazing non-governmental organisation, Plan my Gap Year, I will be going on a two month venture to Cambodia where I will be volunteering in one of these orphanages. The orphanage is home to over 60 young people and relies on volunteers and the generosity of other to provide a safe home for these people. My primary role will be to teach English. One of the most amazing things about this program is that through volunteer support the orphanages not only give the children a home, food and safety but also an education. As a volunteer I will be working with people from all over the world to help and educate people who are less fortunate then we are and hopefully make a difference, even if it’s a little one.
This fundraiser aims to raise money for supplies for the Children in the Cambodian Orphanages including teaching supplies, sporting equipment, hygiene purposes, toys and gifts. Donations of materials or supplies are also very welcome.
100% of the donations will be going to the benefit children.
I know many people will not be able to donate financially but if you know anyone who would be interested in donating I would love for you to share this fundraiser with them!
HAPPY DONATING !
