Calculator Drive for Students

Hi everyone, my name is Lewis.

I am a Mathematics teacher who is passionate about my subject. I started teaching in 2008, and have never regretted the choice to be a teacher. As I venture in my tenth year in teaching, I have realized and watched students get frustrated because they can't complete math questions as they don't own a calculator. I believe calculators allow students access to mathematical concepts and allow them to have experiences which paper and pen would not have allowed them to have.

The use of calculators make it possible for students to explore and experiment, while enhancing the learning of mathematical concepts. Even though the calculator usage is a must at the high school level, many students do not own calculators. The reality is calculators are valuable educational tools that allow high school students to reach a higher level of mathematical power and understanding.

I have battled on my own, purchasing calculators for students from my personal funds. I am saddened whenever I have to choose a student to give a calculator because my heart sinks when I see the others who have none.

It’s for this reason I am embarking on a calculator drive, to purchase calculators for the students I teach.

Without your help, I will not be able to give students this necessary tool that will help them on their Mathematics journey.
