I'm collecting clothes, shoes etc for the refugees trapped in the Calais camp known as 'The Jungle.'

I'm loading the car up and will go towards the end of August and will stay in The Jungle for 9 or 10 days working as a volunteer.

Conditions for the men, women and children are appalling and there's a chronic shortage of shelter, clothing, food, toiletries and medicines: in fact, a shortage of everything.

Most of these people are refugees (not economic migrants) fleeing war situations and are trapped in this camp because of our government's refusal to set up an asylum application screening process. Together with other people from all over the UK I feel that it's time for ordinary people to stand up and do something. All people have the right to be treated with basic dignity and respect.

£170 will cover basic petrol, ferry and insurance costs. I have a car and sleeping bag so will stay in The Jungle at no cost.

£200 would allow me to buy more food and toiletries etc

£250 would enable me to get much needed shoes/trainers and anything more could be spent on blankets and sleeping bags etc. or as advised by French church and charity organisations working there.

I'm retired so I have the time to be able to do something useful to help men, women and children who have absolutely nothing.

I'll provide updates on Facebook about what I'm doing, what conditions are like and about every day life in The Jungle. Feel free to message me on Facebook or to email me at [email protected]. A useful information link is Calais Migrant Solidarity, on Facebook.

  • That link doesn’t appear to work and cutting and pasting doesn’t work either. The link was to a letter from the Co-operative Bank confirming the transfer of the balance of the fund, 306, to the local charity I was working with, in Calais, l’Auberge des Migrants. If you would like tosee the letter please email me at [email protected] and I’ll send it as an attachment.

Update posted by Bill Watson at 06:45 am

I arrived last Thursday morning in torrential rain. After meeting my contact we went into the secure government Jules Ferry compound to unload my stuff. Jules Ferry contains the accommodation for about 100 women and children, the various supply warehouses and the government kitchens.Just after lunch a queue was already. . . . .
