The very first MYBRIGHTON & HOVE 2019 calendar is a social enterprise initiative for individuals who have been affected by homelessness. The project is run completely by volunteers, in partnership with Community Interest Company Café Art.
In June this year, at One Church in Brighton, 100 Fujifilm single-use cameras were handed out to people affected by homelessness. They were given the brief to take photographs on the theme "My Brighton and Hove". Training on how to use the cameras was given by volunteer photographers at workshops in May and June, and again on the day of the handout.
It’s the first year of the project and so far feedback from photographers who took part, and organisations supporting them has been overwhelmingly positive.
“MYBRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project has recognised the amazing talents of a group of people don't always get the recognition they deserve. People who were given cameras were also given a platform to have a voice and show their perspectives of the world, which means those who took part have felt empowered and acknowledged in a way that is unfortunately rare. This project has enabled residents to find a passion and purpose, some going on to photography courses, others having their work in a gallery to show their children, some will be able to earn money through their photos. We at Brighton YMCA are so proud of everyone who took part, thank you for organising such a wonderful initiative.” - Briony Banks, Brighton YMCA
