I have signed up to do a 3-week volunteer project in Tianyar, a small fishing village in Bali. Outside of the fast developing and touristy areas along the southern coastline, Bali is still a very undeveloped island with many poorer communities. I will be volunteering in a unique kindergarten facility which allows parents to send their children to kindergarten for free to start their all-important education in the English language.

Many of the inhabitants of villages like Tianyar are not able to converse in English at all and this greatly affects their chances of being able to take advantage of this new-found income potential. It is widely considered that pre-school years are the most important years of a child's life and the best time to start learning a foreign language. As the kindergarten is fully funded by the fees that volunteers pay, I am hoping to raise funds to support this very worthwhile cause.

My volunteer role will be to help teach the children the basics of the English language through play and interaction, through arts & crafts, singing & dancing, and sports.I also hope to raise enough funds to take over some resources for the children, such as pens, paper, toys and games, as their supplies are very limited.

This volunteering project will be a fantastic opportunity for me to give something back to the poorer communities in the world.

For this fundraiser I will be running 5km every day in the month of May – rain or shine – and you will know I’m a bit of a ‘fair weather runner’ like my dad, so this will be a challenge!

The project is hosted by The Mighty Roar. All of their community programmes are sustainable. Not only do the volunteer programmes directly help within the local community, but they also ensure that all tasks aid the local economy, respect all cultures and support and develop the local infrastructure.

Your donation will really make a difference so thanks for reading this!
