Covid-19 Objective Zero Hunger (C19OZH)

COVID-19 is the most serious health crisis in modern history infecting more people every day, leaving many in a state of limbo wondering when life will return to normal. Self-isolation has caused many people to feel lonely and detached from the world, but being alone together is what is bringing us all together right now. We are all facing this crisis together which is why we need to lend a helping hand and to support those around us more than ever before.

The global COVID-19 threatens to force the poorest of the poor to life-threatening extremes and force many into food insecurity. In South Africa, many who depend on the informal sector as a source of livelihood have lost significant daily income due to the continued lockdowns; by the time the economy reopens most of these informal traders won’t have the capital to go back and pick up the pieces in the market to rebuild their businesses. Many others in the formal sector are losing their jobs due to companies downsizing their operations.

On top of food crisis, this has put many households in financial difficulties. Many are failing to pay their rentals thereby could be facing evictions, those on mortgaged houses could lose their homes and many might not be able to pay medical bills.

These individuals are struggling to find ways to survive, and although this is a nerve-racking time, there has never been a need for people to stand together in the face of fear.

Food Sourcing Foundation’s C19OZHis about our own resiliency as a society and about putting the focus on the power of the collective as a whole and how powerful we can be together in order to fight hunger. When we build up our collective power we are better positioned to fight back against hunger. Together, we can feed our hungry neighbours.

As we find a way to cope with this pandemic it is important to remember to look out for neighbors, friends, and families. During this time, we must remind ourselves how fortunate we are to be in a world full of technology where we can stay connected and help those in need. All citizens of the world must stand together by sticking up for those whose voices cannot be heard.

Our main goal at Food Sourcing Foundation is to help and maintain this form of unity and support from others around us in times of need. That’s why we have set up the C19OZH to support people who have lost their jobs with rent, utility, food, and medical expenses to individuals who are struggling during this unprecedented time.
