Campaign Story
The Vis International Moot Court Team at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University is the only on-campus opportunity for students to prepare and participate in an international commercial arbitration moot court experience. The object of Vis is to foster study in the areas of international commercial and arbitration laws and encourage the resolution of business disputes by arbitration. We research issues relating to the U.N. Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (“CISG”), draft briefs for the claimant and respondent, and advocate for both sides in front of mock arbitral panels both domestically and internationally. We are passionate about international law and strive to represent the the law school and its values in regional and international moot court competitions with domestic and foreign universities.
This year we are competing at the annual Willem C. Vis (East)? International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong at the end of March. For more information on the competition please visit: http://www.cisgmoot.org/index.html.
We have worked really hard and sacrificed a lot to prepare for competition. We have written briefs during the school semester and over our Christmas break, practiced mooting three hours a week since the beginning of school, and now we want to compete internationally.We have already had to fund our transportation and accommodations to an earlier competition in San Diego. But now we need your help.
In years past BYU fully funded our competition however this year our funding has been greatly reduced. Six of our eight team members are traveling to Hong Kong. Here is a breakdown of our expenses:
Our costs:
Airfare = $840.40
Accomodations = $253.34
Food = $360 (9 days at $40/day)
Total = $1,453.74 per person for a total cost of $8722.44
Our school is contributing $440 per person, which leaves us with a total need of $6,042, or $6,468 before subtracting fundraising costs.
That means we each have to raise an additional $1078 per person to reach Hong Kong. Will you help us get there?
Thank you!
