hello there, my name is Kimberly a volunteer social worker in Mathare Slums in Nairobi Kenya. Together with a group of friends we volunteer and mentor girls and also provide them with Sanitary Cups. having been brought up in the slums, when you got your menses that either meant missing school or having to improvise with sponge from worn out mattresses or cotton wool. most of us lived hand to mouth and we lived typically on a dollar a day or two. this meant therefore that buying sanitary pads was the least of my parents worry. their worry was how to put food on the table for me and my other 6 siblings. this meant that every month you had to miss school sometimmes even during exam days. as i grew up i knew that i did not want any other girl to have to choose between being a woman and education. together with my friends we have been lobbying corporates, fundraising from friends and other volunteers and have so far provided sanitary cups for 700 girls across 3 schools. with your help we could reach many many more. the sanitary cup when taken care of can last one upto 10 years therefore saving one from the shame associated with periods. the money will be used to purchase cups and also facilitate mentorship programmes for girls to tell them that they can make it regardless of where they come from. we have a two month timeline to provide the cups in may when the new school term begins since we are working together with schools to provide the sanitary cups. having experienced the shame and pain that one one goes through, i wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy and neither should any girl have to go through it. the government cares little about provision of sanitary pads but instead provides free condoms. " having sex is a choice, menstruation is not." let us help a girl realize her goal of having a decent education without worrying whether their periods will cut short their term dates. Kindly help us in whatever little way you can, either by; donating, sharing with a friend or even coming to help speak a word of encouragement to the girls for those who can. whatever little effort will be appreciated Be blessed.
