On November 12, 2012, Roy Black died in a car accident. He was far from completing all he had to give this world. Did Roy Black touch your life in some way? Did Roy build your website or build your database? Did he teach you Java, or fix your phone? Did he sit at your restaurant or pub and tip you well no matter the service?
If Roy was in your life and you wish you could just buy him one more round, please "Buy Roy an IPA" and contribute $5 or $10 to the Roy W. Black Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will award a sophmore or junior year student that has contributed to Open Source projects in some way as Roy was a big fan of open source and sharing his code. The award will depend on the size of the fund, but I would like it to become a perpetual fund that gives every year.

A group of us will be meeting tomorrow, April 3rd at Charlie's Kitchen in Harvard Square, Cambridge to toast the memory of our friend Roy on what would have been his 46th birthday. If you knew Roy, feel free to stop by starting at 7pm to raise an IPA to the memory of the friend we sadly lost. I will read from your kind words at Charlie's, the place Roy and I met back in 2008. He is missed. -matt

Roy saved my ass more times than I can remember. Seemed like he knew everything. A brilliant mind to lose.

Roy was a brilliant guy, and I'm happy to have met him. When doing my internship, he played a big part in improving my understanding and knowledge of programming. Hopefully we'll be able to help provide others with an opportunity to learn, as I have learned from Roy.

Roy Black was a brilliant programmer. He was hardworking, dedicated, yet extremely serene. He did his job in a professional and efficient manner, and anyone who knew Roy in a business environment benefited from his input. Roy is a great loss to our company and the industry. Even if you didn't know Roy, please consider "buying him a beer" to help fund a scholarship (even if a one-time grant) to encourage a young person to adopt his business and leadership style.

Roy was a great guy and a pleasure to work with. I was always amazed by his level of coding and the programs he would build. He will be missed and my deepest condolences to his family.

Knew Roy briefly but he struck me as a caring person.

Roy would have loved the thought of helping to fund someone's education. Good idea.
