We are the couple, Mar and Belen Hinacay, from the island province of Bohol, Philippines. We had been teaching Philosophy in Mindanao universities for the last 20 & 25 years, respectively.

Our marriage was blessed with 3 children all boys. The eldest and the second are now registered nurses. Our third is a special child, 10 years old now.

Yichang, the special child, was born on Sept 2008 as a premature child and in a caesarean operation. On the second day after his birth when the doctor has to give him milk, he vomitted it. Only to find out that there is a problem with the structure of his pancreas. Instead of being leaf type, his is ring type that grips his intestine and makes it obstructed.

An immediate operation was performed in one of the hospitals in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines and we stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of that hospital for almost a month. Our total bill amountedto almost a million. Where did we get the amount? From loans with 20% interest per month. To save the life of our child we took the risk to borrow this big amount as we have nobody to turn to. Bank loans need collateral.

We suffered the burden of paying just for the interest of around 200,000 pesos per month. This caused us a great depression. Our combined salary as teachers is not even sufficient to support our daily expenses. To answer our monthly liabilities with our creditors, we ventured into other online jobs, wrote our books and ebooks, and took our luck into network marketing business.

We cannot go abroad as we need to fully attend to our special child 24/7 plus our age. My husband suffered depression. Due to financial constraint, our special child has stopped from schooling as we could not sustain the fees for the school, the developmental doctor and the speech and occupational therapists.

It has been 10 years and we are still trapped in the same situation — paying our 200,000 monthly interest without paying yet the capital amount borrowed.

We have been praying to God that one day we can be liberated from this ordeal. And, instead, God gave us a vision and a great life assignment and that is to start a free school for special children in our home province in Bohol.

A big question lies ahead. How can we put up this dreamed school when in fact we are still confronted with big financial liability. We have the area for the school. We know our capacity as teachers. We just lack the start-up capital.
