Bunny Hikes the AT

Update posted by BunnyHikes On May 01, 2013

I've left the trail.
For now at least.

This had been going through my mind for the last several days and, as I was hiking down down down into Hot Springs, I heard myself thinking clearly “it’s time to go home.” Springer Mountain, GA to Hot Springs, NC. Nearly 300 miles. This would be a good place to hit the pause button.

At dinner the next evening with my festie friends Marian & Sharon, I said it out loud but there seemed to be no way to leave that tiny mountain town. Along came Alpine with a stress fracture in her foot and instructions to go home … and I instantly had an overnight ride to DC where I could pick up Amtrak.

Nothing is black/white for us Libras. Many factors played into my decision. Constant worry about finances at home and needing more appropriate gear, things at home not going smoothly and requiring my attention, some serious homesickness for friends, family and dog, and a very strong feeling that I needed to be doing more for and with my family, my chosen community, & Fest.

Hiking the first nearly 300 miles of the Appalachian Trail did amazing things for my confidence and my ability to prioritize. I can take care of myself in ways I would not have thought possible. Hell … I can survive sleeping in 15 degrees!
The AT will always be there. Katahdin isn't going anywhere.
Family, friends, Fest? Maybe not.

I sit here now with a burning in my left arch, a throbbing in my right thigh, and a particularly unsettling sensation on the inside of my right knee. I’m with someone special in Poughkeepsie, NY for a few days before heading on to Rochester. Not sure where I'll live for the next 5 months but be assured that I'll be close to people I love.
And I'll be at Fest with 2-4 festie virgins!

Still updating my blog from my notes and photos.

Thank you all SOOOOO much for your love and support!
