Building a village school in Cameroon

Dou you remember your first years of school? Remember what they were like? What was your Kindergarten teacher’s name? Well, if you had one, you are better off than the hundreds of children who have attended elementary school in the remote village of Lala-Mission, in Cameroon in the last 20 years. Why? Because the village has no kindergarten classroom and children have no choice but to start school at age 6 or 7 in first grade. And that is not the only problem; they share the same classroom with 2^nd grade students. The blackboard is split in the middle by a line drawn with white chalk by their teacher, the left side of the board being for first grade instructions and the right side for second graders.

The existing school facility was built in the 1940’s and some of the buildings are partially destroyed. The poor state of the school buildings is a safety hazard to the students and teachers, who are exposed to the elements such as rain, wild animals and unrelenting sun. In addition to being a safety hazard, this is not the ideal learning environment.
