Campaign Story
Things don't seem to be getting any easier, and following the news recently, it doesn't appear that they will get better any time soon, so we've decided to do what we can to help the refugees 'living' in Calais. It's always hard to know what, if anything, to do. Whether it be due to a sense of powerlessness to affect or influence those with the ability to make real active changes, or knowing what the right causes, charities, or problems are that need the most help. All we know is that we can all do something, no matter how small, and that if many others can do their own small things, it might amount to something greater.
With this is mind we’re taking on a challenge we’re dubbing ‘Buddy & Bendy’s Big Bike Ride’. We’re going to be volunteering with charities, who provide aid and opportunities to the thousands of refugees living in dire conditions in Calais. The conditions are even worse during winter months, so, in order to raise money, we took leave of our senses and have decided to cycle there!
Neither of us have ever done a big bike ride like this before, I’m not sure Bendy even knows how to ride a bike, but we both decided that we wanted to DO something. In reality it’s a fraction of the endurance needed to make it as far as some of the people in Calais have travelled, and a fraction still of the perseverance needed to be camped there, but we’re hoping with your help it will make some difference to some people who could do with a lot more help than we’re able to individually give.
So what are we after….? We’re doing this entirely off our own back, so are really hoping to pool resources BIG TIME with some of the amazing people in our lives. Bath based charities and teaching organisations Music Workshop, and BYDC have kindly lent us two top-drawer bikes, and we’ll be twisting arms for places to stay along the route. Primarily the bike ride is to raise money for the food, cooking and building equipment, medical supplies, as well as the numerous kitchens and creative opportunities and projects. Please donate to our Fundraiser page, we’ll also be hosting some fundraising events we would love to see you at, and if you have any donations we will get them sent out. But it’s not just money, it’s going to be pretty cold and we are pretty unfit (I am, a full 90 minutes of footer takes a week to recover from) so we’re also looking for advice, cycling/survival equipment we could borrow, or any suggestions as to what we might need along the way. Even if you just pop your head out of the window and cheer us on as we struggle past.
The world seems a pretty blunt place at times, and there are so many causes that need drastic help, but the fact is that we can’t all help, all of them, all of the time. But little by little, and brick by brick, we can build a house we can all be proud of.
Thanks for reading, wish us luck!
