Campaign Story
Bringing Leslie home to her family
In August 2017 our daughter Leslie, aged 38, was admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg with a chest complaint. While there she suffered a massive heart attack brought on by a pulmonary embolism. The resuscitation took 20 minutes which caused severe hypoxia. This created total memory loss and wiped out any recollection of her family, friends and career. We are hoping that with long term therapy she may start recalling certain areas of her memory. Leslie cannot move or talk as she is 85% mute and 90% quadriplegic. She cannot swallow which was caused by the tracheotomy she had to endure for 4 months. She is fed by a tube directly into her stomach and has to permanently wear nappies. Her food is a specialized professional liquid only manufactured by one company.
Leslie has a wonderful husband Sean and 2 beautiful daughters Leah and Sinead aged 9 and 6 who have been through this never ending nightmare without their mother for nearly 3 years. Leslie has been in ICU, then on to a step down facility and finally into a frail care centre.
My wife and I are pensioners and have had no alternative but to move in with her husband and their daughters as all of our savings have been exhausted on Leslies care.
The family would like to bring her back to her home as we believe this will be more beneficial for her long term health and well being. We do not have the finances available and are requesting any kind of support to help her get a hospital bed, a full-time helper, a commode and a hoist to move her from the bed to the shower and back into her wheelchair.
The family also require urgent assistance to buy her food and adult nappies.
Her medical aid does not cover any of the above.
Any donation, large or small would be gratefully received. Thank you.
