My name is Claudia Hilda, I am a Cuban professional contemporary dancer. For more than eight years I have been working for Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, where I had the opportunity to perform in the principal theatres of more than fifteen countries. Travelling around the world allowed me to get involved with different cultures and people; a fascinating experience that taught me a lot about acceptance, inclusion, and love.
In 2017, as part of a Company tour, I visited the UK for first time. We performed in several cities, and I realized how humble, warm, and sharing British people are, and how nicely they connect with and embrace Cuban art and culture.
Years later, with a lot of hard work and blessing, in September 2020 I had the honor to be a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship and the opportunity to come to London to study a master’s in Dance Performance and Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
To study in London in the middle of a pandemic crisis has been truly challenging. However, after nine months of self-isolation, quarantines, online classes, I have now the blessing of being fully vaccinated so I can start enjoying a sort of “normal” life again.
Nevertheless, while things are coming back to normal in London, in my country Cuba the situation is getting worse. Covid is taking lives, the medical system is at the brink of the collapse, and we are running out of medical supplies and medicines. My profound love for my country and my responsibility for it in hard times made me launch this Campaign appealing to your kindness, generosity, and humanity to help Cuba and its people (my people), in its vaccination efforts against SARs-COV-2 virus.
I am raising funds to buy disposable medical supplies such as syringes, needles - and related materials - to support vaccination in Cuba. The funds raised will not be sent to Cuba directly; instead, they will be used to purchase medical supplies here which will then be shipped to the island to the places where are more needed.
Cuba recently registered its highest number of weekly contagions. More than 35000 patients were reported, with an average of 9000 daily cases and the circulation of the Delta variant in several provinces of the country.
Furthermore, the number of children and young people infected has aggressively increased. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 more than 41,801 patients aged sixteen and under have been diagnosed. This situation is very alarming and moving, children and pregnant women are dying due to the lack of medical supplies.
It has not been easy for Cuba to ensure a high level of response in the accessibility, and extensive coverage of the health system since we are a poor country that faces a very complex economic situation. Even though, the health system works at the limit of its capacities, Cuba has developed its own Soberana-02 and Abdala vaccines which have shown a high level of effectiveness against the virus.
There is hope… but the shortage of basic medical supplies puts at risk the vaccination system and the immunization of the population.
Funds from this campaign will directly support the vaccination of the Cuban people. Together we can save lives, we can build hope.
Kindness, Love and Humanity make us stronger!
