On February 13,2014 my husband brought home a 10 week old white Maltipoo puppy. We named her Sophie and our kids Emma age 5 and Travis age 7 were in LOVE. Shortly after we brought her home she began to get sick vomitting everything and having bloody stools. I immediately brought her to the Mission Animal and Bird Hospital, after some tests we found out she had parvo. Most puppies die from this even if they are hospitalized. The vet allowed us to take her home and I administered IV fluids and an array of medications (none of which came cheap). i slept on the kitchen floor with her because I was afraid something would happen in the middle of the night. Her tummy was soo upset from all the medication I made all her food by hand and fed her the best. She did get better and beat the odds. Everyone was happy again, two weeks later she began with the tummy issues and bloody stools, I rush her back to hospital and do the parvo test again which isnt cheap and fecal test. We discover she is tummy parasite very common to puppy's And the parvo is gone. yay after a pricey vet bill we leave with more meds. Puppy is now completely attached to me and my kids who helped take care of her the WHOLE TIME, sometimes to the point it drove me batty. At least they loved her.
Two weeks later she started having seizures at night quite a few in an hour and it didn't slow down. This day happened to be April 1st. we just paid rent health ins all the normal bills. So the emergency vet and the most amazing nurse who I will never forget send us home with some phenobarbital to hopefully stop the seizing as all the other treatments were too pricy and we had just spent over 1000 in the last month for puppy's vet. The seizures don't stop and I'm up all night with Sophie crying and feeling soo helpless. The next night we go into the vet and she tells my husband and I the puppy needs critical care right away it looks like she may have a liver shunt and will likely require surgery costing us in the high thousands. We had the option to pay a few thousand, or to put her down, or sign her over our rights to her to a rescue Last Chance at Life. We had no options as they wouldn't give us a payment plan. So we signed her over. The only way we can regain ownership is to pay the bills we are not allowed to adopt her from the rescue. We were all devested especially our children.
The following Monday my son Travis came home and told me he wrote a letter at school to the rescue and said thank you for saving Sophie if I sell my toys and bring you the money can we get her back. My heart broke. He urged his father and I to do a garage sale and try to get the money together to get her back.
So we have put together a garage/bake sale and have handed out flyers and are praying for a miracle. Well we later found out Sophie doesn't need surgery she likely at a piece of bakers chocolate which is extremely toxic to dogs especially a 3lb puppy. She only ate half a square when the kids got into it think it was a candy bar. I had no clue of it's potency to dogs.
We have had contact with the rescue and hospital and if we pay $4544.19 we can bring our puppy home. We know this is a big number but it is do able with help if 250 people donate $20 or 500 people donate $10 we can do this and bring Sophie home! I wanna show my kids that even when all hope seems lost you can't give up. My son seems to think so! Thank you!
