A lost civilization...again
During my photowalks over the past couple of years in the small town of Leona Vicario in the Riviera Maya, Mexico I have met and become friends with many Maya families.
After awhile I started to realize that most of the children don't speak Maya anymore, many of them have never been out of town or had any holiday travels. They have never been out in the jungle to swim in a cenote or visited one of the Maya ruins. They simply don't know about their awesome and majestic ancestry.
Reminding the kids of their history
The Maya family who I live with in the jungle owns a vast area of land with unexcavated Maya ruins and cenotes which we started to clean and open up so that kids can swim in safely.
We started to invite Maya families from town to come out on weekends to enjoy the wonders of the Maya world. Since most of these families have very little money we either pick them up with our car or pay for buses and taxis. We have a Maya history and language teacher who tells the children about their ancestry in a fun and exciting way and it is great to see the their big eyes and how interested they are.
How you can help
We would like to open this program to more children in town and the surrounding villages for the Easter and Summer holidays. We will continue to pay for the teacher as we have paid for the opening of the cenotes but we do need help to get a suitable transportation so that we can carry the families safely.
We are thinking of getting a used pick-up truck strong enough to make it through the jungle roads and have it fitted with seats in the back.
Thank You
